Primary elections live updates: Big races are on the ballot in Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Texas

Today, Republican voters in Georgia will decide a marquee primary contest for governor between incumbent Brian Kemp and former U.S. senator David Perdue, an election that could be a big setback for former president Donald Trump as he tries to play GOP kingmaker. Trump is backing Perdue, who has echoed Trump’s baseless claims of 2020 election fraud, while the heavily favored Kemp is supported by former vice president Mike Pence.
Also in Georgia: Trump’s preferred candidate, former football star Herschel Walker, is expected to prevail in the GOP Senate primary. And Trump is backing Rep. Jody Hice (R) in a bid to knock off Georgia’s incumbent secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, who stood up to Trump’s false election claims in 2020.
In Alabama, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) is trying to win a GOP Senate primary after losing Trump’s support against well-funded opponents Katie Britt and Mike Durant.
What else to know
On our radar in Ark.: Who is Sarah Sanders?
Sarah Sanders, a former White House press secretary under President Donald Trump, is widely expected to win the Republican nomination for Arkansas governor on Tuesday.
Sanders, 39, has only one opponent in the GOP primary, radio show host Doc Washburn, and has been endorsed by Trump, who encouraged her to run for governor of Arkansas in 2019. Sanders’s father, Mike Huckabee, was governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007.
In launching her campaign last year, Sanders echoed the combative, anti-media, hyperpartisan tone of the Trump administration.
“I took on the media, the radical left and their ‘cancel culture,’ and I won,” she said in her announcement video. “As governor, I will be your voice, and never let them silence you.”
The report by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III on Russian interference in the 2016 election found that on at least three occasions Sanders perpetuated a false narrative, including one on the firing of former FBI director James B. Comey. She dismissed it as a “slip of the tongue.”
Sanders is one of two Republicans and several Democrats seeking to replace Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R), who did not run for reelection because he is term-limited.
